11 Outubro - LEG 1 (recorda os Descobrimentos !)
Leg 1 - Alicante to Cape Town
The start has moved south again, from north-western Spain to the Mediterranean port of Alicante. But, once the vagaries of the Med in autumn and the Gibraltar Straits are overcome, the race will take on a familiar form to Cape Town – trade wind sailing, then aiming to pick the narrowest spot to cross the Doldrums and escape back into the south-east trades, followed by a swerve down the coast of Brazil to avoid the light air of the Horse Latitudes and the St Helena High.
The fleet will race south to be first to pick up the westerly breezes on the southern hemisphere storm track, before heading east to Cape Town. If they’re lucky, they’ll hold the breeze all the way in, but Table Mountain is famous for parking the boats in sight of the finish.
